Los Angeles-based recording artist Jimmy Poindexter has shared new single ENCORE in promotion of his latest album SHAZAM. Here's a full recap of the events that's led up to the track. Check out the new music video directed & edited by Jimmy below.
Concluding "Act II" of the SHAZAM rollout, Jimmy has shared a new music video for ENCORE. As this chapter comes to an end, let's recap all the hard work Poindexter has put into the album and it's promotion.
Returning from a short break after releasing his previous album DWMYH (as well as a few loosies), Jimmy directed his attention to taking back control over his financial future with creating his own streaming & social service Zulak. Beta testing a web app where fans could support him directly, he proved it's possible to successfully break away from the now 'traditional' streaming monopoly that is Spotify/Apple Music/Tidal/etc.
In an effort to drive traffic to the platform, he debuted The JMMY Show, a reality docu-series that shows the behind the scenes process the artist has to endure. The trailer as well as episode one share the making of a 'blockbuster hip hop album.' Shortly after, Jimmy's accounts on social media went radio silent as we waited to see what would happen next.
Jimmy shared on his social media accounts that he would be walking away from music to pursue a 'new passion.' This was met with mixed responses from spectators being disappointed, upset and confused. A couple of days went by before we would hear from the artist again.
Jimmy shared stories on Instagram from fans finding flyers around Southern California advertising him as a magician with the toll-free number (833)-3SHAZAM attached. As fans began calling the number, they found that they could book him for a magic show, leave a review for his magic show or listen to a snippet of music for a clue. Some left voicemails of confusion & anger while others seemingly understood it was the beginning of a rollout leaving hilarious ones (which Jimmy made available to listen to here).
A few hundred voicemails later, Jimmy began appearing at birthday parties & events to show the world what he left music to pursue. The musician-turned-magician's sets were leaked by fans across SoCal showing Poindexter performing horrendously before being booed from the events. The final of 3 videos revealing him having a mental breakdown on camera after a heated phone call. So-called 'fans' wasted no time bashing him on social media for making the switch from music to magic and berating him via direct message to voice their opinions on his magic skills.
As the final magic show performance video rolled out, fans began noticing clues hidden around Jimmy's official website suggesting to find a secret passcode.
Very soon after, fans found that the passcode 'JIMBOLINISMAGIC' was a link to a new website with a timer & looping music on it. The timer was set to November 10th, 2023 (the same date found in the clue given by the toll-free number).
Once the day came & the timer ran out, a new trailer was shared by Jimmy revealing The Great Jimbolini as the mascot for an upcoming project. On jimbolinismagic.com, visitors found an interactive experience that explained the story of Jimmy's transition from Jim Kazam, a terrible local magician, to Jimbolini a world class magician being mind controlled by Eve Centeno (The full experience can be watched here).
Jimmy shared videos of himself dressed as The Great Jimbolini appearing in front of various doorbell cameras creepily performing magic tricks. Fans reported having one of the videos appear on their Spotify Wrapped for 2023. What a creep that Jimbolini guy is...
The magician shared the lead single from an upcoming unnamed project-- and it was absolutely fire. The Great Jimbolini's musical debut was met with open arms.
Jimmy announced that his latest album SHAZAM would be releasing November 24th, and 2023 on Zulak and December 1st on all other DSPs.
The magician shared the second single from SHAZAM that occupied the pop-rap slot on the tracklist. A certified banger.
The first cover story article that covered Jimmy's process & intentions going into SHAZAM. Also some fire photos.
The tricky magician shared three tracklists which appeared to be full of potential guest features. They often say that if a magician is showing you one thing, it's a distraction for another. In this case, the real tracklist was never here! It was on Apple Music/iTunes! Bravo!
The new album was made available exclusively for users on Zulak. It was met with great reactions!
As Jimmy explains, billboards are expensive and mostly useless. Make fake ones instead!
The final single before SHAZAM's worldwide release. People loved how personal it was for Jimmy. It was also just a great song.
The album dropped. That's it.
The day after the album dropped, Jimmy talked with fans for two hours on stream to talk about the album.
As said before, physical ads = expensive/bad. fake = free/good.
The official merch for SHAZAM was released. People loved the Funko Pops and autographed memorabilia!
The second leg of promotion was announced. No one knew what to expect. Acts for a rollout had never been done before (at least that we know of).
Hell yeah brother! Pop some champagne bottles! Just keep 'em away from Jimmy, because he doesn't drink/smoke.
Jimmy's first editorial playlist placement on YouTube Music. Spotify, catch up!
The first and only music video for the SHAZAM era. Shot, directed & edited by him, it was a wonky little 3D experience. Truly capturing the childlike wonder aspect of The Great Jimbolini.
Episode two revealed the behind the scenes process of Jimmy finishing & releasing SHAZAM.
He did it again. Flexed his pen over some current & old school beats! It was unanimously fire.
Jimmy showed us he didn't need a Tiny Desk Concert. He can do it at home in his backyard. Just give 'em a mic.
Jimmy & his wife (and mastermind behind The Great Jimbolini) Eve talked about the process of creating the SHAZAM experience together. Don't call it a podcast! It's not a podcast!
New filters, stickers and what-have-yous on all social media platforms. Enjoy!
Jimmy's step mom was out and about in Los Angeles and happened to stumble across her step son's number one mentor. So she took a photo with 'em. Small world!
Jimmy reveals a new mini-documentary that showed his journey from birth to SHAZAM. If you don't know much about him, this is a great start to learning more.
The latest cover story & review of SHAZAM that details what's so special about the album. Also, more fire pics.
Two new interviews were shared on Jimmy's YouTube channel. One found Jimmy talking about the music itself on SHAZAM while the other asked the artist 13 questions about his life. Great watches and you learn more about how Jimmy thinks.
The final installment of the SHAZAM era. A nice little unexpected bow on top of the moment. Solidifying his artistry & persistence.
